Roberto de Zerbi speaks to the media ahead of Brighton’s Premier League match at Southampton on Monday.

Here are the main lines of his press conference:

  • Defender Adam Wester and striker Danny Welbeck will both miss the trip to St Mary’s through injury, although the latter could be fit for next Saturday’s game at home to Arsenal.

  • De Zerby said he and his team were “gutted” by their midweek Carabao Cup exit to League One side Charlton on penalties, but felt the Seagulls “played well enough to win”.

  • The Italian confirmed that World Cup winner Alexis McAllister will have two weeks off, adding that “I want Alexis to come back when he is ready to play”.

  • He said Brighton would face the new challenge of having successful players at international tournaments, which big teams like Liverpool and Manchester City are used to – “For us it’s completely different,” added de Zerby.

  • De Zerby said the game against Southampton would be “difficult” under new manager Nathan Jones, but added: “I have faith in my players – they have experienced this last result and I expect a good response on the pitch.”
