The New England Patriots (7-7, 3-3 at home) look to move one step closer to an NFL playoff spot when they host the AFC North-leading Cincinnati Bengals (10-4, 5-3) on Saturday in Foxborough. away) at Gillette Stadium (1:00 pm EST).

The Pats are currently ahead of the #7 Miami Dolphins and #6 LA Chargers (both 8-6) and are only a half game ahead of the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets (both 7-8) who played Monday. With just three games left, New England’s playoff hopes should literally be won Saturday.

Both New England and Cincinnati have battled significant injuries throughout the season, but while the Bengals enter Week 16 largely recovered, the Pats still have a mountain of serious injuries to deal with.

WR DeVante Parker (concussion), CB Jalen Mills (groin), OT Isaiah Wynn (foot) and WR Ty Montgomery (knee/shoulder) all remain sidelined, and now long snapper Joe Cardona (foot) is out for the season. Additionally, several other pieces of the Pats offense are questionable, including WR Jakobi Meyers (shoulder), RB Damien Harris (thigh), RB Rhamondre Stevenson (ankle) and WR Tyquan Thornton.

The large health discrepancy is one of the driving forces behind the Bengals’ status as three-point road favorites. It’s also one of the driving forces behind my first player selection for Saturday.

Player Support #1: Mack Jones with 220.5 passing yards

It’s hard not to feel a little sorry for Mack Jones at this point in the season. The Pats entered the year with one of the less explosive receiving corps in the NFL, and now it’s significantly thinner. Cincinnati’s top three receivers (Tee Higgins, Ja’Marr Chase and Tyler Boyd) all have more receptions than New England WR1 Jakobi Meyers (640 yards), who is questionable for Week 16.

With limited weapons to work with and the Pats relying heavily on their above-average defense, Jones has been held under 200 passing yards in four of the past seven games. He had his worst performance of the season, going just 13-30 for 112 yards and no touchdowns in a devastating 30-24 loss to the Raiders.

Leaving much to be desired in the pass rush, Cincinnati’s defense is excellent in the secondary. They rate in the top ten in coverage per ProFootballFocus and hold opposing QBs to just an 81.5 passer rating (6th best in the NFL).

The big concern with this bet is that the Bengals have a lead and the Patriots will be forced to throw to catch up. During Cincinnati’s current six-game winning streak, five QBs they’ve faced have passed for at least 223 yards. Each of the past two weeks, an opposing QB has thrown more than 40 pass attempts.

But Bill Belichick will do whatever it takes to keep this game from turning into a shootout. He doesn’t want to fight the Bengals’ raging fire with the Pats’ Zippo lighter. Expect a low-scoring, run-heavy first half and, ultimately, modest stats for Jones.

Pick #2: Joe Barrow 9.5 rushing yards

One area where the Patriots should find great success against the Bengals is in the pass rush. New England is currently third in the league with 48 sacks on the season, while Cincinnati has given up the 7th most sacks (40). Importantly, sacks in the NFL do not count as negative rushing yards (as they do in college). In the pros, sack yards dwarf a team’s passing totals.

Barrow is going to be pressured early and often on Saturday and will most likely be forced into the fray. The stats show a positive correlation between Barrow’s sacks and Barrow’s passing: In the five games the Bengals have given up three or more sacks, Barrow has topped 20 rushing yards four times.

While he’s averaged 9.5 rushing yards in exactly half of Cincinnati’s games this season (seven of 14), his rushing yards per game average (17.6) is nearly double entering Saturday. He’s shown his above-average mobility on the 20-yard dash this year and has 10-plus carries in seven of 14 games.
