Bengaluru: Jokes made in public on sensitive issues like bomb threats are not to be taken lightly. The Bengaluru Police on Thursday arrested a 20-year-old engineering student for his tweet on “bombing” the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). Police said the accused has been identified as Vaibhav Ganesh, a third year engineering student and a resident of Kudlu Gate in south Bengaluru.

Police said that on December 10, the accused wrote on Twitter from his identified account ‘futureftsufjan’, “I will bomb BLR (Bengaluru) airport J so they can rebuild the one closer to the city.” Though the tweet was later deleted, it garnered attention.

Meanwhile, Anoop A Shetty, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Bengaluru’s Northeast Cen Division, asked people to refrain from making such threats.

Desperation lands students in jail

Based on a complaint by the airport terminal manager, the Kempegowda Airport Police Station registered a case against the accused on December 12 under sections 505 (statements causing public mischief) and 507 (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication) of the Indian Penal Code . the police said.

Following the complaint, the Northeast Division police formed a special team and launched an investigation along with cyber crime police to nab Vaibhav and the arrest was made on Thursday. The police have also seized his mobile phone from which this tweet was made.

During interrogation, the accused told the police that he was facing difficulty in traveling between his residence and the airport, as it was far away, and had tweeted “in desperation”, police said.
