Of all the things driving technology forward, you’d have to say that chip makers’ ability to squeeze more complex circuits onto silicon than ever before has to rank right up there. And while there’s no doubt about it, it tells only part of the story. For our money, though, advances in battery technology over the past 30 years are the real winner, because without compact, cheap, energy-intensive batteries, almost none of the cool stuff we see today, from smartphones to electric vehicles, would have happened. would be practical.

Battery technology has come a long way since the days when carbon-zinc and nickel-cadmium cells were king. New chemistry, improved materials and methods, and engineering improvements have contributed to incredibly powerful, incredibly compact batteries that enable applications that no one could have imagined just a few decades ago.

Join-Hack-ChatDave Sopchak has been active in the field of battery engineering since earning his doctorate in electrochemistry from Case Western Reserve. Since then he has worked on a number of fuel cell start-ups, and is now working on a lithium-air battery which sounds really interesting. We’ve asked them to help us kick off the 2022 Hack Chat series with a discussion on battery engineering, focusing on upcoming technologies and advancements that could really put some power in your pocket.
