Alabama OC Bill O’Brien reportedly ‘strong option’ to join Patriots to help Mack Jones | Jobs Vox

It looks like Mc Jones’ latest nightmare may be over soon.

The second-year quarterback has clearly been a disappointment this season as the Patriots offense has been ineffective. By now, it’s clear that Bill Belichick made a mistake in how he handled the team’s offensive play-calling situation after Josh McDaniels lost to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Well, it looks like Belichick is trying to fix the problem.

According to NFL Network, citing sources, former Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien is “a strong option to return to his former home and resume his old role under Bill Belichick next season.”

O’Brien, 53, entered the NFL with the Patriots as an offensive assistant in 2007. He served as the wide receivers coach (2008) and quarterbacks coach (2009-2010) in the organization before earning the title of offensive coordinator in 2011. O’Brien called the offensive line from 2009-2011 after McDaniels left for Denver. He left the Patriots organization in 2012 to become the head coach at Penn State. He most recently worked at Alabama as their offensive coordinator.

If that happens, it would not only be a sign that Belichick recognizes the Patriots’ problem and offense has been coaching, but also an indication that the Patriots are rooting for Jones. The 2021 first-rounder had a strong rookie season, throwing for 3,801 yards with 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Jones earned Pro Bowl honors as an alternate and earned a spot on the NFL’s 2022 Top 100 Players at No. 85.

Jones seems to be regressing this season. After McDaniels left for Las Vegas, Belichick hired Joe Judge as the team’s quarterbacks coach and hired Matt Patricia to be the offensive line coach and call the plays. It was nothing short of a disaster. Jones threw for 2,310 yards with seven touchdowns and eight interceptions. He has five games this season where he hasn’t thrown for a pass, compared to one game where he’s thrown for two or more.

The Patriots offense is worse in almost every category from last season. They’re 25th in yards, 23rd in passing, 19th in rushing, 29th on third downs, 30th when it’s first-and-goal and dead last when they’re in the red zone.

The ineffectiveness made Jones prone to outbursts and outbursts on the field. If Belichick brings in O’Brien, it will give the quarterback an experienced offensive coach who has been great with Tom Brady and the Patriots. In 2011, the offense finished third in the NFL in points and second in yards. They used a two tight end system with Hunter Henry and Jonu Smith helping out.

In addition, O’Brien has coaching experience at Alabama, where Jones played. The Patriots quarterback met O’Brien in the 2021 offseason when he was replacing coach Steve Sarkisian. It was said that Jones helped O’Brien learn the Alabama playbook.

Belichick said on Dec. 5 that the Patriots would not change their offensive lineman position during the season.

“I think we have to do what we do better. “I don’t think there’s going to be a lot of dramatic changes at this point — it’s very difficult to do,” Belichick said.

However, dramatic changes appear to be coming.
