Airtel, Tech Mahindra deploy private 5G network at Mahindra's car manufacturing unit in Chakan

NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel on Thursday said it has deployed a private 5G network at Mahindra’s Chakan manufacturing facility under a strategic partnership with Tech Mahindra.

The companies said Mahindra’s Chakan facility has become India’s first car manufacturing unit with 5G technology.

The rollout of the private private network, they added, has significantly improved Chakan’s network connectivity, resulting in improved software flashing speeds, a critical operation for all vehicle dispatches, the telecom said in a statement.

Fast network speeds and ultra-low latency now allow managers to undertake multiple software flash sessions in parallel. The private network is also used for fully automated computerized vision-based inspection, resulting in improved paint quality, it added.

In July, Airtel also successfully tested a private 5G network at the Bosch facility in Bengaluru, using trial 5G spectrum allocated by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

“We are delighted to partner with Tech Mahindra and Mahindra Auto to demonstrate this transformation and make the Chakan manufacturing facility India’s first 5G car manufacturing facility,” said Ajay Chitkara, Director and CEO, Airtel Business.

In an interaction with ET, Ricky Corker, Chief Customer Experience Officer, Nokia, said that momentum has started to build in India around private 5G networks. “This is an opportunity for us and our desire is to work through the operators because we have an excellent relationship with them.” They have a broad spectrum and a relationship of trust with many of these businesses.”

“As the Industry 4.0 paradigm gains momentum, reliable data networks will prove to be a key differentiator in factory and manufacturing performance. This is just the beginning and I am sure we will introduce many more innovative use cases that will help redefine manufacturing in India,” Chitkara added. “We are confident that this partnership will help unlock opportunities across industries to improve productivity, fuel the intelligent digitization of network-driven enterprises, and drive innovation,” said Manish Vyas, President, Communications, Media & Entertainment and CEO, Network Services, Mahindra technology.

Airtel said its connectivity portfolio combined with Tech Mahindra’s expertise in systems integration, planning, design, deployment and management of private wireless networks will benefit business customers and accelerate 5G adoption in India.
